Kobad

Prisoner: Tihar Jail

New Delhi.

Last year when Kobad Ghandy was shifted from Jail No.3 to Jail No.1 in Tihar Jail, he donated his books to the library of his former cell-block. It was difficult for him to carry the books to his new cell.
In the new block there is no library. Nor is there company. Mohammad Afzal Guru, with whom he discussed Sartre, was hanged in 2013.

67 year old Mr. Ghandy, an activist, was arrested in Delhi in September 2009 on charges of being a member of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) and is facing trial in several cases under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

Mr. Ghandy, who grew up in sea face flat in Bombay’s Worli locality and studied at the Doon Shcool and St. Xavier’s College, forsook his privileged lifestyle to work and live with the country’s tribals, Dalits and rural poor.

Thanks to Parsiana magazine for the photo and providing Mr. Ghandy with some of his reading material, including The Ballad of the Reading Gaol, over the last five years of his imprisonment.

Caterer: St Xavier’s College Canteen

Caterer: St Xavier’s College Canteen St Xavier’s College (1869), Cruikshank Road, Fort (presently 5 Mahapalika Marg).

Since 1991 Mr. Udaya S. Shetty (Anna) has been feeding batches of hungry and hungover students of the St Xavier’s College in Bombay; first from the mess he ran in the boys’ hostel on campus and more recently from a counter in the main canteen itself.

52 year old Udaya combines the efficiency of his native Udupi catering culture with a courteousness and humility that are rarely found in bustling Bombay.
