Royal Alfred Sailors’ Home

Royal Alfred Sailors’ Home (1876)

Junction of Apollo Bunder Road and Apollo Street (presently Maharashtra Police Headquarters, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Marg, Colaba, entry prohibited).

The construction of the Sailors’ Home was a significant step towards containing and domesticating the population of seamen in the city, long considered drunk, disorderly and prone to recreate at taverns, boarding houses, grog shops and brothels.

Notice the three nautical motifs.

The article on thee Sailors Home is interesting. Wonder if anyone knows that my Grandfather Mr Apolonario Desouza had the contract to take care of all the catering facilities at the Sailors Home way back in the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s. Wonder if there is any article available to identify this. His food preperations were authentic Western/Goan cuisine and was very much liked by mostly British seamen that came to stay at the Home.
